Springtime in Madrid means it’s time to finally shed the scarves and boots, go play outside and enjoy the beautiful Spanish sun.

Travel

So, there are lots of destinations outside of Madrid that are really worth exploring, but, I have to say, Salamanca has been my favorite mix of beautiful historic sites and a great night life.

Looking for a chill Sunday night activity? You should totally checkout Sala El Juglar. Located at Calle de Lavapiés 37, this quaint bar puts on flamenco shows every other Sunday.

None of us wants to be that tourist standing out on the street with the map in front of their face. I’m here to learn the language, but I also want to know more about the people, the culture and the daily life of Madrileños.

With no Martin Brundle to watch, F1 fans in Madrid may feel a little lost. Well here at European Vibe we are going to give you the low down on all the teams and drivers. Moving into a Spanish family

There isn’t a Spanish equivalent for wow, my host mother tells me, laughing kindly.

Damn, I think. That word comes out of my mouth too many times a day, and I desperately want to try for fluency. Okay has a counterpart in vale, but nothing for wow?

You could say oh, oh, oh with a look of surprise, my host mother suggests.

That isn’t the same, my host brother chimes in, but he even admits there isn’t much of a synonym. I got lucky - both my host mother and brother speak English rather well.

Just say wow, my host mother says. Está bien. There are plenty of English words used in Spain.

But I would rather not. I am a 21-year-old university student trying to legitimize her Spanish degree. I need to speak Spanish, and my host family does force me to speak Spanish (other than wow), and always treats me with gracious, motherly patience as I struggle, stutter and before long spit out some Spanglish cocktail of a sentence.

Bikram Yoga in Madrid

Happy New Year all, here’s hoping you had a fantastic time over the Christmas break wherever you were and whatever you got up to. Perhaps you spent your holidays quietly with your family, shunning the usual consumerism of the festive season and instead remembering the true meaning of Christmas. More likely though, it was an excuse for a fortnight-long orgy of boozing, bad TV and eating your own weight in turkey and mince pies. Combined with the fact that probably the only exercise you did consisted in dancing on the photocopier at the office Christmas party and/or chasing unsuspecting victims under the mistletoe, those favourite jeans may well be feeling a little tight right now. What to do? Well, forget those silly diets you’ll stick to for all of five minutes and don’t bother with that expensive gym membership you’ll never use, to banish that spare tyre and keep those bingo wings at bay, Bikram yoga is the way forward.

Clock strikes twelve, signalling the beginning of a new year and for most cities across the globe, a killer party.

Travel Spain

In the south of Spain there lies a city, the jewel of Andalusia, gently shadowed by the Sierra Nevada Mountains. At a glance, Granada looks like any other European city: small buildings and narrow streets bathed by the sun. Venturing deeper into the area, the traveler discovers a beautiful, lively Spanish world, highlighted by history.

Travel Spain

Watching the flamenco dancers stomp their way through Andalusian guitars and vocals, I thought about how strange it was that coming from a virtually unknown Midwest suburb, I was in Córdoba, a city–albeit small–known for its rich, Muslim history and important place in Spanish history. I smiled to myself as I sipped my vino blanco; it was the first time that I actually felt like I was really in Spain.

La Riviera 9 December

The mélange of synthesizers, upbeat electric guitar, and rhythmic guitars contributes to the distinct sounds of Editors, The Maccabees, and Wintersleep, three Indie bands from different sides of the Atlantic coming to La Riviera on 9 December.

Standing outside the Moby Dick Club on Avenida Brazil, I felt slightly disoriented. The outside of the club was swanky and modern, with white walls, neon blue lights, and an intimidating bouncer at the door. This was not the venue I envisioned the indie, rock band Temper Trap to perform at.

If you want to break out of the regular Sunday routine of El Retiro or want an alternative to a lazy Sunday, then El Viajero is the answer. Located in Plaza de la Cebada, a two-minute walk from La Latina stop, the three-floored restaurant is bustling with activity.

Ahh…another weekend, another protest and a day like any other in my barrio Anton Martin. An intoxicating mixture of sounds pillage the air. Amongst those sounds are the autobus, a piercing shrill announcing fruit for sale from the local fruit-cart lady, and the steady chants of a mid-day protest. Hold on, protests in Madrid, and in mid-day no less?

Ever wonder why people emulate fashion from hit TV shows? Even worse, why people emulate fashion from non-hit TV shows? Is it because people have an inherent desire to wrap themselves in a piece of fame, hoping for that rare moment when they might be confused for said famous TV stars? Or is it simply a love of dressing like a fool?

Upon arriving to Madrid I was told by the locals that among “to do” list of going to El Prado, Joy Eslava, and El Retiro, was to spend a Sunday morning at La Latina. La Latina, which is than a on the green, number five line, is more than a metro stop. As soon as you exit the metro station, you realize this is the place to be on Sundays—from couples, to families to Italian tourists, there are hordes of people walking standing about the station waiting to meet up to experience a Sunday at La Latina.

Starbucks. For those of us who don’t dislike coffee and who aren’t obsessed with Moby Dick, which is approximately 99.99% of us, hearing the corporate moniker invites thoughts of fragrant coffee beans and glass cases lined with pastries—overpriced but delicious. At least in the corporate-worshipping, whipped cream-loving United States, that is.

Many enjoy the thrills, chills, blood, and gore that characterize horror movies, but the popular genre has been around for decades. Original plot ideas that genuinely scare are running short. After directing a box office smash, it is difficult to create an equally successful sequel, and Catalan director Jaume Balagueró’s follow up to the 2007 horror hit, [Rec], is no exception.

The Metro
The Madrid metro is clean, punctual, and every single platform has a counter that informs you how soon the next train will arrive. The Paris metro is not so clean, only a few stops have countdowns for the next train, and I saw multiple people hopping over the turnstiles. I’ve never seen that in Madrid, although it would be considerably easier because the Madrid metro does not have a turnstile and a swinging door at each thruway. Furthermore, while the doors on the Madrid metro do not open until the train has completely stopped, people hop off the Paris metro while it is still moving. I was waiting for the train to stop so I could safely get off, and the Parisians behind me got impatient and a little pushy, like New York drivers at a fresh green light. However, the speed of the Paris metro slows the Madrid metro down to a crawl. The Paris metro literally zooms from stop to stop, taking me through ten stops in fifteen minutes.

I like to eat meat. Correction, I love to eat meat. Being half Argentinean having a healthy appetite for meat basically runs in your DNA. So when my friend suggested we have dinner at a vegetarian restaurant, Isla de Tesoro, I was extremely nervous of wandering into the unknown territory of vegetables and tofu. However, I was not disappointed. On the contrary from the moment I walked into the Isla de Tesoro I was completely won over by the place. Dimly lit, with straw curtains and starfish decorations on the wall, the restaurant had more than a cozy feel to it—it felt like walking into grandmother’s kitchen. But the food was even better than grandma’s, not to mention healthier.

Bars

Walk into El Chapandaz and you are immediately transported back to the Stone Age. Wax drippings cover the windows and rock formations hang from the ceiling giving the trendy nightspot the nickname "the cave bar."

Getting out of the Tribunal metro, I find myself shoulder-to-shoulder with various gothic brides. As I make my way to the street, I catch glimpses of punk zombies and vampires dressed in knee-high leather boot. Granted its Halloween eve, yet I am still somewhat surprised by the amount of corsets, laces, and spikes that surround me. It suddenly dawns on me that I ‘m used to seeing “the sexy firefighter” and “the skanky nurse” back in the United States.
